How to Use This Theme
-Â Calling. God’s call requires work, whether through school, individual spiritual preparation, or both. As evidenced through Paul, it takes a lot of work to fulfill God’s calling. It means we may need to go “back to school.” (Gal 1:11-2:2)
-Â Jesus the Teacher. The Sermon on the Mount is evidence of Jesus’ skill as a teacher. By authoritatively distilling the Law into a comprehensible form, Jesus took the teachers “back to school.” (Matt 7:29)
-Â Spiritual Formation. Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness was a personal test that empowered him for his coming life. Similarly, spiritual formation is about choosing to enter into times of testing in order to strengthen us for radical discipleship. (Mark 1:9-15)
-Â Wisdom. Paul points out to the church at Corinth that the wisdom of the world is folly in God’s eyes. Just when we think we may have it all figured out, God sends us back to school to be made a “fool” again. (I Cor 3:18-23)
