Our latest article, written for Church Production Magazine, is one of the most critical reads in our Design Matters series. This fourth chapter covers the all important principle of composition.
Learning how to effectively layout (or compose) an image is fundamental to becoming a good designer. This article points out many of the basics, and provides other valuable insights that will take your design process to the next level.
Check out Design Matters: Composition, and if youve missed out on the first 3 articles you can get caught up in our reading section.

The New Year is a time of resolutions and new beginnings. There is no better new beginning than the grace and forgiveness of God's love in Jesus Christ. Our new gameboard image, from spark volume 3, is a great way to setup the idea of Fresh Starts.
This Monthly Media Freebie includes the complete worship graphics set, including layered PSD file for editing and flattened BMP graphics with title, without title, and a blurred song background. For more on Midnight Oil's collection of worship graphics.
And dont forget that you can get all of 2004s Monthly Media Freebies on our Monthly Media Freebie Collection CD. But you have to act fast. This CD will only be available until January 31st, and will not be offered again. You can learn all about this offer right here.

Well, Christmas may be over, and most of us may have taken our trees down by now, but there is one last remnant of the season to celebrate. Were happy to announce the winner of our Bethlehem Star Tutorial that ran in November and December of last year.
There were a lot of great images submitted to us for consideration, all of which can be seen here in the gallery, but the image created by Pastor Tim Coombs took the top spot in our contest.
Tim will receive a free copy of our Monthly Media Collection 2004 for his winning submission. We asked him to share a bit about himself and his experience with the contest. Heres what he had to say:
How long have you been creating media?
I've been creating media ever since my internship/sabbatical at Lumicon Productions in 2001. That time was my introduction to all things digital.
We remember that--what fun! What is your position at your church?
I have two half-time church jobs (yes, I know "half-time church job" is an oxymoron). I am co-pastor at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Scotia, NY and contract staff for Congregational Health and Transformation for Albany Presbytery, a position in which I am exposing congregations to digital worship ministries.
Youre a busy guy. What was the most challenging thing about the Bethlehem Tutorial?
For me it was just making artistic decisions about how much or how little lighting effects I wanted to use. How bright would the star of Bethlehem shine on the earth? To me, that is as much a theological as a physical question.
Thats right. We hope everyone brings this kind of depth to their creativity. How long did it take you to complete the image?
I completed the basic graphic in about an hour or two. However, I did return to tweak it a few times.
Since this is an award contest, do you have anyone you'd like to thank?
Well, I owe a personal debt of gratitude to the Midnight Oil guys who allowed me to look over their shoulder while they were the Lumicon guys. Of course, there is Tom Boomershine and Amelia Cooper, the Network of Biblical Storytellers. Lastly, Apple Computers -- though maybe they should be thanking me!
I dont think Apple reads our newsletters, but ya never know! Thanks and congrats Tim. Youve come a long way since that internship years ago!

Believe it or not, Spark and Flame 3 will be out in the near future. A series of unexpected delays including a major hard drive crash (where we lost 20GB of data), relocating our main office, and the holiday season has wreaked havoc on our production plans.
If you are a preorder customer, youre first on the list to get your order the moment theyre in our hands. Were even going to include a special gift for to reward your patience during the long delay.
Thanks for your patience and support of our ministry.
